Secrets within Secrets: An Adventures in Parodyverse and Untold Tales Tie-In

Glory, the Dog Dynamo padded her way across the Lair Mansion garage, following the sounds and scent of her best friend in the world.

“Hello, Dominic,” she bade him in her unique language of growls and body movements, “Why are you taking apart Miss Shiro’s motorbike?”

The big man in the patriotic commando wear was sprawled on the concrete floor, meticulously dismantling the machine’s engine with his tool kit, “Yuki likes being challenged, and its obvious she has too much time on her hands, so….” he hopped to his feet and surveyed his work. Every component that made up the sum of the cycle was on display, except for a key piece to the disassembled alternator, which Epitome pocketed, “This should keep her busy for a few hours.”

“Is this another example of friendly intramural hazing?” the Pooch of Power asked.

“Yes,” Dominic removed his gauntlets to stroke the Border collie, “That’s it exactly.”

Glory thumped her tail appreciatively before speaking what was on her mind, “I have been conducting an investigation into your memory loss, and have a theory on who is responsible.”

Mr. Epitome looked surprised, “Really?”

“Yes. Would you like to hear it?”

“Of course.”

The former government agents strolled the mansion’s yard, Dominic with his slow and steady gait, Glory loping beside him. She began.

“First, I requisitioned the security tapes of the OPS office the night you lost your memory. Expert analysis indicated that a computer virus disabled the sensor system.”

“Expert analysis?” Epitome inquired

“I consulted with Hallie.”

“I see.”

Glory went on, “The evidence would imply that someone used technology to conceal the cause of your memory loss, which supports the theory that it was a premeditated attack. From there I put together a list of suspects who would have the expertise to design such instrumentation. I then remembered an old case of yours, before I was your partner. The trial of environmental terrorist Brother Earth led to an acquittal when several key eyewitnesses claimed to have forgotten what they saw or heard. You suspected witness tampering by Earth’s followers, but could never prove it. But there have been uncorroborated rumors of mind-altering technology developed and utilized by criminal elements for years. It was originally theorized as part of Factor X’s operation, but now I think the Idiom is its creator. And I also believe she is the one who removed your memory.”

Dominic seemed disoriented by the accusation, “I don’t think so, Glory,” he said flatly.

“But she was an ally of Brother Earth back when she was engaged in her own anti-establishment attacks on America. She has a connection to you, and then there is the discussion she had with Katarina.”

“What?” the Paragon of Power stopped walking, “What discussion?”

“The Idiom met with her at her store four months ago, and talked about how she could help you through your then new circumstances.”

“And you know this how?”

“I interviewed Miss Allen.”

“I see,” Dominic rubbed his forehead resignedly, “Er, when you conducted these interviews with Hallie and Kat, they were, uhm, separate, correct?”

“Of course. It is all in my report, along with a more thorough explanation of the evidence that points to the Idiom as a suspect for your transformation. Would you like to read it?”

“Not necessary,” the Man of Might stated as he walked back to the mansion, “I think you’re on the wrong track, Glory, about the Idiom.”

“Why?”

Epitome looked down at the Canine Champion fondly, “I think your logic is off. It’s flawed.”

“In what way?”

“It just is.”

Glory was confused. She had assumed Dominic might not have been enthused with the implications of her findings, but to dismiss them out of hand was unlike the normally thorough thinker. As she pondered the significance of this a primal stimulus roused her instincts into action.

“Woof! Woof woof!!” the black and white sheep dog took off like a bullet for the mansion’s portico and the person standing on it.

The figure, a woman, nearly leaped out of her skin at the sight of the approaching animal. With a yowl she bolted across the lawn, a blur of pink and purple, and manically clambered up one of the yard’s many trees.

The Hound of Heroism stopped at the base of the oak, circling it, “Woof!” she barked at her quarry.

“Glory, what’s going on?” Epitome rushed up and stared at the woman his partner had treed, “Oh.”

An angry looking girl with feline features glared down at them, “Why isn’t that thing on a leash?” Violet the Part-Time Cat hissed

“She’s asking you the same question,” Dominic smirked jovially as he grabbed Glory’s collar. The young dog, having regained her composure, appeared chastened at her intuitive slip, “Come on down.”

“You sure you got her?”

“Now and forever,” the Man of Might quipped.

Once the young lady had shimmied down the tree and stalked off Dominic bent to whisper in his friend’s ear, “I hate Andrew Lloyd Webber as much as the next person, Glory, but you can only take your criticism so far before someone calls the pound on you.”

“I am so embarrassed,” Glory whined, tail between her legs.

“Don’t be. But your actions here do illustrate why I can’t take your charge that the Idiom is behind my memory loss seriously. For all your intelligence you are a dog, with a dog’s instincts. So maybe, just maybe, you’re trying to protect other people from being implicated? People you care about?” he gave her an assuring pat.

Glory didn’t think that was the case at all, but she was willing to humor her friend for the moment. At least until she could gather more information, in a manner that would allow her to use those instincts to her advantage. When she went to Badripoor, and could she the Idiom herself, and, more importantly, take in her scent.

Then she would have all the proof she needed. What to do with it would be another matter entirely.
